3rd "Second Saturdays" event being held May 8

2john

DIXON – Downtown Dixon organizations will host the 3rd Second Saturdays Art Happenings.  Second Saturdays in April was even bigger than the first.  In April, Distinctive Gardens sponsored a community photography contest, “Second Saturdays Snap-a-Thon” in which people were invited to snap shots of April’s Second Saturdays festivities and upload their favorite to the Second Saturdays Facebook page.  The public voted for People’s Choice using Facebook’s “like” button.   April’s Second Saturdays “Snap-a-Thon” winner was Patricia Barrile of Dixon who won a gift certificate to Distinctive Gardens after she snapped a shot of John DeLong during a quick break from his painting demonstration.

2musicFor May, a total of twelve venues will feature art, openings, music, poetry, and painting demonstrations.  Select participating merchants offer Second Saturdays specials for the night.  The Crystal Cork Wine Shoppe offers its “Artini” martini and Baker Street Café will host a special Second Saturday dinner featuring Pretzel Crusted Chicken and Bruschetta Pasta, reservations required for this special dinner.

Three new venues are on the line up: Green River Sports, Waterfront Gifts, and Hennepin 109 Building featuring music by Steve Catron, artist Betty Predmore, and more.  There are many new exciting happenings this month.  Highlights include: Trein’s Jewelry Happening, featuring Dixon Main Street sculpture project, the maquette by sculptor, Michael McNamara of founding father, John Dixon.  The maquette is the first stage in creating a life-size bronze sculpture of the founding father to be placed in Dixon.  The Crystal Cork Art Quarterly opens “Sojourn”, paintings by Jayne Rose, and Deb Cleary will give a painting demonstration at Tangibles.

2nps“This is an evolving community event and we encourage artists, groups and venues with an event they want promoted to contact us through Second-Saturdays.com.  Don’t be shy.  If you don’t know where to start, but want to join in we can help with that too.  We want the community to make this their very own creation, unique to Dixon, IL”, states Lisa Higby LeFevre, area artist, business owner and Second Saturdays contact.

Second Saturdays is a monthly cultural event in downtown Dixon organized by a core cooperative of local artists, Hope Greene, Rick Munson, John DeLong, Lisa Higby LeFevre, and local businesses, The Crystal Cork Wine Shoppe, Trein’s Jewelry, JSalon, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Tangibles, and Distinctive Gardens.  Together we aim to enliven the downtown and get people out walking to see what’s going on in their cultural community. If all area arts groups pull together, both artists and community benefit. Those interested in participating in Second Saturdays should contact any of the core cooperative people through www.Second-Saturdays.com or Lisa Higby LeFevre at -  815.285.0014 or email - This email address is being protected from spambots.
