The function of the Building Department is to protect the general health, safety and welfare of the public by administering and enforcing the City's building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, housing and other codes. Their efforts are designed to enhance the quality of life for residents and eliminate unsafe buildings.

As part of the enforcement process, major permits are issued for building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical (heating, cooling, refrigeration). A permit is also required to erect a fence and for other minor construction projects such as storage sheds.
